Boston Scientific and its logistic provider Hellmann Calipar Healthcare Logistics hosted local authorities for the inauguration of a new distribution centre in Dubai (UAE) earlier this month, representing a key milestone in its strategy to expand access to medical technologies in emerging markets.

The company operates its supply chain from over 20 locations around the world and this new distribution centre, managed by Hellmann Calipar Healthcare Logistics, represents a significant investment in building Boston Scientific supply chain capabilities in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region to support its expansion goals.

“The opening of the Dubai distribution centre is an important investment in the region, which provides closer access, so our devices are delivered to customers and their patients when and where they are needed,” comments Darragh Tolan, vice president growth emerging markets EMEA at Boston Scientific. “In addition, this is a testimony to the growing relevance of emerging markets to the global medical device sector.”

Optimising shipping is also an important focus of the company’s ideal product flow strategy, which includes a goal to increase direct shipping to destination regions by approximately 90% by 2026. The end-to-end approach is enabling the company to drive more efficiency and sustainability in how our products are sourced, manufactured, packaged and distributed, supporting greater resiliency and reliability across its supply chain.

About the Dubai distribution centre

The distribution centre is located in Dubai South, part of two connected free zones of Dubai World Central (DWC) and JAFZA. The Dubai distribution centre will allow Boston Scientific to better serve its customers and patients, reduce logistics costs and lead times, as well as enhanced targeting in specific markets in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

The location allows goods to be delivered to Jebal Ali seaport and to Al Maktoum airport within 15 minutes. Goods can reach one third of the world population within four hours from order and two thirds of the world population within eight hours.

Covering 4,000 square meters and with a capacity of 600 pallets and 2,200 cubic meters of shelving storage, the part of the centre dedicated to Boston Scientific is estimated to have a volume reaching three million units by 2026. The facility is equipped with energy efficient technologies, contributing to the company’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 20501.
