World Thrombosis Day: Keeping our Eyes Open

World Thrombosis Day – Keeping our Eyes Open
World Thrombosis Day takes place every year on 13 October, the birthday of Rudolf Virchow who was a pioneer in the pathophysiology of thrombosis. A German physician, pathologist, biologist and anthropologist, Virchow developed the concept of "thrombosis" and advanced our understanding of this condition.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a very common but silent condition in which a blood clot forms in the vein. It manifests itself either as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), which occurs when the clot forms in the deep vein of the leg, groin or arm; or Pulmonary Embolism, when the clot travels in the circulation and advances to the lungs. VTE is a dangerous medical condition and one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide.

Detailed estimates of VTE events are hard to obtain because they are very difficult to diagnose and often clinically silent. However, VTE is preventable and evidence-based prevention strategies can help stop the development of clots in 'at-risk' individuals.

On World Thrombosis Day 2022 Boston Scientific will hold a live case transmission centred around a patient presenting with post thrombotic disease. This patient’s case will highlight the burden of disease and need for action, specifically underscoring the serious consequences related to Venous Thromboembolism. Physicians are welcome to join the discussion here

Boston Scientific is committed to provide solutions for effective Venous thromboembolism (VTE) treatment and with our venous portfolio and clot management solutions we are helping health care professionals in everyday practice to treat more patients suffering from VTE.
