Rediscovering life's rhythm: Lucy's atrial fibrillation treatment

Nov 13, 2024

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common heart rhythm disorder affecting millions of people worldwide. In Europe alone, over 6 million individuals live with this condition.1 AF can significantly impact quality of life, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations. This condition can also form blood clots in the heart. When the blood clots dislodge, they may move through the aorta to the brain, where they can become blocked in a narrow brain artery, stopping the blood flow and causing a stroke.

Lucy experienced firsthand the challenges of living with AF. After years of unexplained symptoms and multiple misdiagnoses, she finally received a definitive AF diagnosis in 2022. Her journey underscores the impact of AF on everyday life and the importance of timely, accurate diagnosis.

To address her condition, Dr Claire Martin, a consultant Electrophysiologist at Royal Papworth Hospital in the UK, recommended a minimally invasive procedure using the FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) System. The FARAPULSE PFA System uses precise, targeted energy pulses to silence the areas of the heart causing abnormal electrical signals. The technology, which has been used to treat more than 125,000 patients across 65 countries and is supported by extensive data,2 offers several benefits, including reduced risk of damage to surrounding heart tissue and a shorter recovery time.

Lucy underwent the PFA procedure and was discharged from the hospital on the same day. Since then, she has experienced a significant improvement in her quality of life. "Since the operation, my quality of life is 9 out of 10," she shared. "The ablation procedure enabled me to return to a normal, active lifestyle."
