When Rob’s mum told him that he may have a genetic heart condition and could be at risk of sudden cardiac arrest, a serious medical condition where the electrical system to the heart malfunctions and suddenly becomes very irregular, he was naturally keen to be immediately assessed.
Whist his worst fears were confirmed as having inherited the condition; he was also relieved to learn from his doctor that he could be fitted with an Implantable Cardiac Device. An ICD continuously monitors the heart rhythm 24 hours a day and delivers a shock to return the heart to normal rhythm in case of a sudden cardiac arrest.
After discussion with his physician and careful consideration, Rob chose to have an S-ICD (Subcutaneous Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) which is an evolution in ICD therapy. It’s implanted just under the skin with no wires touching the heart. Thus, it eliminates potentially serious short- and long-term risks associated with placing electrical wires inside the heart and blood vessels.
After being fitted with an S-ICD, Rob was happy to be able to return to his active lifestyle and enjoy his mountain biking. “I got used to it very quickly because I feel it’s there, I feel it all the time but it’s just part of me now.”
On his way back from a festival with his friends, Rob discovered just how important a role the device would play in saving his life. He experienced a series of sudden cardiac arrests and each time the device delivered an electrical shock to correct it. “Without this technology, I wouldn’t be here today.”
